"Oh look I can see fish down there"
There are over 130 Bottlenose Dolphins in the Moray Firth. In May and June (2007) there were over 1600 sightings recorded along the coast by the Friends of the Moray Firth. SPEY BAY had its fair share where the Dolphins come to feed on the salmon and other sealife that is abundant in the area.
Often travelling fast in search of Cod, herring, salmon and mackeral, they can be seen out of the water chasing a large fish. The young play in the bay, often spending up to nine hours just milling around.
Tales of dolphins rescuing drowning mariners by guiding or towing them to land led many folk to believe them semi-devine. In ancient Greece they were associated with the goddesses Aphrodite and Thetis, also with the sea god Poseidon. Along this coast we call them "louper dogs" and the Porpoise gets the title of "puffing pig". They steer well clear of the loupers.
